How to Wear White After Labor Day

To me, this is one of those stupid “fashion rules” that never made sense.  Maybe it’s because I live in southern California, maybe it has some other meaning behind it that I don’t know, but in terms of fashion, it’s completely unnecessary.  So here are 5 outfits using some of my favorite pieces to keep your white around after Labor Day …

1. Try a Neutral Palette

OUTFIT #1:

  • White button-front

  • Cropped Wide-leg pants

  • Tan and white striped sweater

  • Peach clutch

  • Marbled patent-leather Matisse Slides

This kinda reminds me of something I’d wear if I lived by the beach or in Carmel or something, but it works for a city girl too. The shoes are kinda a tan-peachy marble with black and the clutch is a peach color. They don’t match exactly and I I like it that way. The pants are white and the sweater is white with tan stripes. Very neutral overall. This sweater can transition all year long because it has a loose stitch and is lightweight, and the colors can be worn with so much. The pants are a nice light material that can be dressed up or down. I wear these slides all the time. They’re neutral but super classy. And the peach clutch was just a little color without putting anything too bold in there.

OUTFIT #2:

  • White jeans

  • Off-white VANS

  • White tee (front tuck)

  • Tan studded Free People purse

This is great for the chillier days. I love white jeans so much! And I love wearing white and cream, or ivory together. I love high-tops too! This is probably the most go-to outfit for me. I also get cold easily, so I wouldn’t do the dress options unless it was a slightly warmer day. But the white jeans could be swapped for white sweats or some longer trousers or something to that effect. And the creamy jacket could be a cream cardigan … you get the idea.

2. Layer it up with some seasonal pieces and colors

OUTFIT #3:

  • Billabong white striped t-shirt dress

  • Free People ankle boots

  • Cropped olive green O’neil Vest

  • Cross-body white purse

This is a casual and comfortable outfit. I could wear this grocery shopping, or out to lunch. The dress is made of thick t-shirt material —stretchy and comfy. I kept my heels under 2” to keep things easy and casual. The vest makes the look feel a bit more autumnal and keeps ya warm! You can easily swap for a jean jacket and trade out the boots for some comfy sneakers. All versatile pieces, lots of white, and works great for fall.

OUTFIT #4:

  • Free People white slip dress

  • Plaid coat

  • White boots

  • Mini red purse

This is another comfy dress option. I’m wearing a cream knit dress slip under the dress. Nothing is tight or clingy. The jacket is oversized and keeps things toasty warm. These boots don’t have super high heels and are comfortable for walking. So, again, I feel like I could wear this to lunch, or to run errands. The coat is nice and warm for the chilly mornings in LA, but by noon when the sun is high, you can take it off and still be comfortable. This may feel a little young, but you can wear any style of white or light color dress here, even a maxi length would be really cute.

3. Wear it Confidently.

OUTFIT #5:

  • White paper bag pants

  • White tank (tucked in)

  • Colorful jacket from Zara

  • BC tan slides

  • Tan zipper clutch

If you’re feeling good and glowing, no one is going to question your style. This does look like a summer outfit, but it is pretty warm in LA in September and October, so it totally works after Labor Day … it just depends on the weather in your area.

The colorful little jacket is lightweight and can easily be layered under a long coat or a jean jacket if you needed a little more warmth – a long camel coat on top would be super chic.

You can swap most of these pieces out for whatever feels comfortable for you.  But the idea is for you to see predominately white outfits that are for After Labor Day and get some ideas of what would work for your style and your wardrobe.
