Things to remember when shopping for the dress
1. Bringing Too Many People
More people = More opinions
Stick to a small group who genuinely knows you. Make sure they know and understand your vision. No haters welcome. And I know you know who they are.
2. Ignoring Your Best Silhouettes
Finding a dress that looks best on your body is the most important. If you’re shorter, a big ball gown is not the look. If you’re heavier and big, bustle isn’t the way to go. Focusing on your best features and bringing those to light is the way to go!
3. Not Considering Comfort
A dress might look stunning, but if you can’t sit or dance in it, you’ll regret it by the reception. Unless you wanna do a dress change, in which case, get the best of both worlds! But really the comfort is also about wearing a dress that you feel like you can work. You wanna own the look that day. You don’t want your dress to be wearing you.
4. Waiting Too Long to Start Shopping
Dresses can take months to be made and altered. Starting too late can leave you stressed for no reason. Aim for 9-12 months before the wedding.
5. Focusing Only on Trends
You know I dislike this in general, but especially for this day. When in doubt, Classic is always better. And we can use accessories to make it feel more special.
6. Forgetting About Alterations
You know how I feel about tailoring. I think it makes all the difference. Most dresses need adjustments, and alterations take time. And don’t rule out having a dress that’s kind of custom. Meaning you found something off-the-rack, but you want to make it a short dress or add a layer of lace. There are lots of options!
7. Don’t Forget About the Venue & the Weather
A heavy ball gown for a beach wedding? A short dress for a winter ceremony? Not only will this help with the comfort part, but you wanna look like you’re the main character of this wedding. So you want to match the scenery.
8. Consult a stylist just to help give you feedback and help you map out the best styles for your body. She can also help you get a little creative if you want something more unique. And it can still be your decision in the end.
The sharp, true way I would handle this process.
I would highly recommend bringing on a stylist for this process, from the beginning.
I would go do a couple rounds of trying on dresses, early on.
Try on all sorts of styles from different stores.
See where I land.
Get feedback.
Narrow down my choices.
Maybe do a hybrid of off-the-rack and some custom touches.
Give myself time.
I would take 1-3 people with me.. Max.
For the first proper fitting, that can be where you take more friends/family, have drinks, take photos, etc.
But up until then, it’s almost like a business transaction.
I need peace, clarity and only trusted guidance from my counsel.
Hope this helps. Love you all.
Best,
Tami Sofia
