What to do with all the stuff!?

Okay, so you’ve cleaned out your closet.... What now?

You have piles of clothes.

●  Some are great, just not for you.

●  Some are a little old, but someone might still like them.

●  Some you just wanna get rid of. Not worth fixing (for you), not something you can donate, or sell.

So what do you do? Here are my top suggestions:

Wanna make a little cash?

Clothing that is in new or great condition can be resold online, taken to consignment shops, or resale stores.

For online, there are so many apps/platforms. Here are a few that I have used. eBay, etsy, Poshmark, Depop. Then there’s Curtsy, thredUP, Mercari, Tradesy, Vestiaire Collective, GEM, and so many more!

Many of these apps are better known for a specific thing. For example, etsy is known for home-made, or made to order items. Ebay, great for vintage, Poshmark is known for contemporary clothing. Mercari does more designer brands. You just need to do a little search and see what’s best for what you’re selling.

For consignment, I would search your area, because there are always local stores that you can take your things to. They do the selling and then cut you a check. It’s usually 40/60 or 50/50. It’s a great option, it just can take a little time. But you won’t be doing any of the work.

For reselling, there’s Crossroads Trading, Buffalo Exchange, Wasteland, TheRealReal (you can also sell online with them), to name a few here in LA. Some of these are chains, like Crossroads Trading. You can go to their website and find the location closest to you.

Just need to unload asap?

ForDays - For $20 they will send you a mailer bag, you fill it up, and send it out. That’s it! You can scan/register your bag and get a credit to shop with them too! They even have a special bag just for COTTON scraps of fabric to be used as scrap fabric and repurposed.

Giving the “take back bag” as a gift can also be a great idea. Only $20 and you’re helping someone clear out their space and keep clothes from ending up in the trash. Win Win!

Suay Sew Shop (located in Los Angeles) - They take donations and repair clothing, and offer free clothing to people in need. They have a “free rack” that anyone is welcome to come shop! Here’s a link to read about donations.

Churches/YouthCenters/Group Homes/Shelters - There are always people in need and people that want to do good and help their community. Try searching any of these in your area.

I’m not in a huge rush, but I really just don’t want things to end up in a landfill!

Try selling on the apps. I feel like this is a great option to get items directly to their new home. And you can make the most money this way. It just takes a little time.

If it’s not about the money, and you just want things to find a good home, I start with friends and family. I gather piles based on people I have in mind and items in their size/style preferences. You could try your neighbors, co-workers, etc. You never know who would love that dress that you’re over.

Let me know if you have any questions and I’ll see you all next week.

Best,

Tami Sofia
